김남표는 2000년부터 2006년까지 <집단 막>을 결성하여 5명의 작가와 함께 공동작품, 공동 프로젝트를 진행했다.

 2006년 소마미술관 전시를 마지막으로 각자의 길을 간 이 그룹 “막”의 체험은 현재의 작업에서 중요한 밑바탕이 된다. 

털 작업 역시 “막”시절 시작했던 것으로 털은 그에게 있어서는 “회화적 원천 체험”이다.

2005년 비닐갤러리에서 있었던 그의 첫 전시에서 김남표는 캔버스 전면에 털을 붙여서 만든 풍경화를 선보인 바 있다. 

털을 한 방향으로 결을 잡고 포크 등으로 결을 거슬러서 그렸던 풍경은 달빛도 없던 날 밤, 사물을 보아야 했던 

원시인들의 시각적인 체험을 연상시킨다.

김남표의 초기작품(1990년대 중후반~ )에서부터 캔버스에 여러 가지 재료를 ‘붙이는’ 형태의 모습들이 지속적으로 등장한다. 

쇠 조각을 캔버스에 붙일 때도 있고 때로는 캔버스 자체를 셰이프드 캔버스(shaped canvas)로 변형시키기도 한다.

 미완성작이라고 여겨질 정도의 흰 여백이나 작품의 맥락과 전혀 어울리지 않아 보이는 이질적인 물질들을 

오브제로서 캔버스에 부착하는 것은 회화의 본질에 대한 답을 구하기 위한 작가의 질문이라고 볼 수 있다.

Nampyo Kim has built up his world of art since 2000 through the activities of the small group, “Mak”. Comprised of 5 people, 

including Nampyo Kim, the small artist group Mak conducted joint works and projects and exhibited its works . 

Although the group disbanded after its last show at Soma Art Museum in 2006, 

Nampyo Kim’s experience in Mak is an importanct foundation for his current works. 

Nampyo Kim's work involving hair also started in his Mak days and represented a "painting source experience" for him.

In his first exhibition the Vinyl Gallery in 2005, Nampyo Kim showed a landscape painting made by

 covering the entire canvas with fur. The painting using the texture of artificial hair looks different depending 

on the lighting conditions. It is named “instant” landscape because of the characteristics of the creative process 

itself. He first draws a part and then continues once he gets a new image from the previous part. 

Therefore, the entire canvas is an accumulation of the parts the artist felt from moment to moment. 

With the completion of the parts, the whole follows. This idea of not knowing what comes next is a concept Nampyo Kim as learned in Mak.

Since Kim's early works (mid/late 1990s~), the technique of "sticking" various materials to the canvas continues to appear. 

Sometimes a piece of iron is attached to the canvas, and sometimes the canvas itself is transformed into a shaped canvas. 

The white spaces that make the work look unfinished and the attached foreign materials that do not fit 

with the context of the work are the artist's way of questioning the essence of painting.
